Calculation Method: How We Calculate
- Our own engine
- Every position comes from NASA JPL's DE440 ephemeris through software we built and tested ourselves. Over a full year, our tithi and nakshatra end times match India's official Rashtriya Panchang to within about a second on average.
- Drik method, Lahiri ayanamsa
- We use the true, observed positions of the Sun and Moon (drik ganita) and Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa exactly as the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris defines it, the standard of India's national calendar.
- Sunrise, as you see it
- Sunrise is the moment the Sun's upper edge appears, with the bending of light by the air included. Every window of the day is measured from it.
- Why panchangs differ
- Two panchangs can differ by a minute or two: older tables, a different ayanamsa, a different definition of sunrise or other city coordinates. The moment a tithi ends is the same everywhere; only the local clock time changes.
The conventions we follow, item by item
- Panchang day
- From one sunrise to the next. The tithi at sunrise names the day (udaya tithi).
- Months
- Shown both ways: purnimanta (North India) and amanta (South and West India). A month is adhik when the Sun does not change sign from one new moon to the next.
- Ekadashi
- Smarta dates: the Ekadashi running at sunrise. Where the Vaishnava date falls a day later, it is shown as well.
- Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika
- The time from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts; the weekday decides which part each one takes.
- Varjyam and Amrit Kalam
- Each nakshatra's span in time is divided into 60 ghatis. Each window starts at the ghati the traditional table gives for that nakshatra and lasts 4 ghatis.
- Bhadra
- Bhadra is the Vishti karana and ends with it. Its mukha and puchha follow Muhurta Ganapati; where it stays (its loka) follows the Moon's sign.
- Tamil yoga
- From the weekday and nakshatra table that Tamil calendars use.
- Raja and Mantri of the year
- The Raja is the weekday of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and the Mantri the weekday of Mesha Sankranti, both counted at sunrise in Ujjain.
- Times
- In the city's own time zone, to the nearest minute, as India's official Rashtriya Panchang prints them: sunrise, sunset, the end of a tithi or nakshatra and every window built on them. Before 1972 the clock is the mean solar time that clocks then kept.
- Overlapping windows
- Where a good window meets a time to skip, both keep their own times, and the shared part is not suggested for starting new work.
A panchang (pancha anga, five limbs) is the Hindu almanac of the day. These are its parts, in the order families usually read them.
01Tithi: the lunar day
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. There are 30 in a lunar month, 15 in the bright half (Shukla paksha, ending with Purnima) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna paksha, ending with Amavasya). A tithi lasts from about 19 to 26 hours, so it rarely matches a calendar day.
02Udaya tithi: why sunrise decides
The Hindu day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, and the tithi running at sunrise names the day. Because sunrise differs by city, the same date can carry a different tithi in two cities, and a vrat can fall on different dates.
03Vaar: the weekday
Each weekday belongs to a planet: Sunday to the Sun, Monday to the Moon, and so on. The vaar also begins at sunrise, not at midnight.
04Nakshatra: the Moon's star
The sky is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each with four padas. The day's nakshatra is the one holding the Moon; most muhurta rules start from it.
05Yoga and karana
Yoga comes from the Sun and Moon added together, in 27 parts. Karana is half a tithi: 11 karanas, 60 in a month. Vishti karana is the one called Bhadra.
06Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika
Sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts, and the weekday decides which part each belongs to. Rahu Kaal is the 2nd part on Monday, 3rd on Saturday, 4th on Friday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 7th on Tuesday and 8th on Sunday. Tradition avoids beginning new work in it; worship and routine work go on.
07Muhurta: the 48-minute unit
The day and the night each hold 15 muhurtas; their length follows the real day and night. Abhijit is the 8th muhurta of the day, around noon. Brahma muhurta is the second-last muhurta of the night, before sunrise.
08Choghadiya and hora
Choghadiya splits the day and the night into eight parts each, named Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Rog and Kaal. Hora gives each hour to a planet, starting at sunrise with the lord of the weekday.
09Months and samvat
North India counts a month ending at Purnima (purnimanta); South and West India count it ending at Amavasya (amanta). The two differ only in the dark half. Vikram Samvat runs about 57 years ahead of the common era, Shaka Samvat about 78 years behind.

Udaya tithi is the tithi running at local sunrise; it names the day. Since sunrise differs by city, a vrat can fall on different dates in two cities.
Why is the panchang different for each city?
Sunrise, sunset and every window built on them depend on the city's latitude and longitude. A tithi or nakshatra ends at the same instant everywhere; only the local clock time differs.
Why do two panchangs sometimes show different times?
They may use older tables, a different ayanamsa, a different definition of sunrise or other city coordinates. We use NASA JPL DE440 positions with Lahiri ayanamsa and the visible sunrise.
