      In the Ashtakoot system, the Moon's nakshatra and rashi of each person are compared on eight kootas. Each koota has a fixed number of gunas, from 1 for Varna to 8 for Nadi, adding up to 36. The Moon is used because it stands for the mind: the match looks at how two minds meet.

      03What the score means

      Gunas count in halves, so a total can be 24.5 or 31.5. Traditionally, 18 to 24.5 is an average match, 25 to 32.5 a good match and 33 to 36 a very good match. Below 18 is a modest score, and then the two complete charts matter most. A high total does not cover a Nadi or Bhakoot dosha, and a lower total is not a verdict on its own.

      04Nadi: the heaviest koota

      Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis: Adi, Madhya or Antya. When both people share the same nadi, Nadi scores 0 of 8 and is called Nadi dosha. Tradition links Nadi with constitution and progeny; it is a classical reading, not a medical one. The tradition gives clear exceptions, such as the same rashi with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra with different padas or rashis, which our astrologer checks before reading it.

      05Bhakoot: how the two Moon signs sit

      Count from one Moon sign to the other. When the two sit 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, Bhakoot scores 0 of 7. When both Moon signs share the same lord, or the lords are friends, the tradition treats the dosha as cancelled. Read it with Graha Maitri, never on its own.

      06Manglik, calmly

      A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is very common: counted from both the Lagna and the Moon, a large share of all charts qualify. When both people are Manglik, the tradition treats it as balanced. Your PDF shows the check for both, from the Lagna and from the Moon; our astrologer reads the cancellations.

      07Matching by name or by birth details

      When birth times are not known, families sometimes match by the first syllable of the name, which gives a name nakshatra and rashi. It is a rough guide only. Matching by date, time and place of birth uses the real Moon of each person, and that is what we calculate.

      08Beyond the 36 gunas

      Guna Milan compares only the two Moons. A complete reading also looks at the 7th house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsa (D9) of both, and the dashas running around the wedding. That is why your PDF includes both Lagna and Navamsa charts, ready for an astrologer to read.

      What people ask us

      How many gunas should match for marriage?

      Traditionally 18 of 36 is the accepted minimum. Gunas count in halves: 18 to 24.5 is average, 25 to 32.5 good and 33 to 36 very good. The score is one input; Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik are read alongside it.

      Can I do kundli matching by date of birth?

      Yes, with the time and place of birth as well. Enter both people's details in the form above and the match is calculated in seconds, with a PDF to download.

      Can kundli be matched by name only?

      Name matching uses the first syllable of the name to guess a nakshatra. It is a rough guide only. Matching by birth details uses each person's real Moon, which is what we calculate.

      What is Nadi dosha?

      When both people's Moon nakshatras belong to the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), Nadi scores 0 of 8. The tradition has clear exceptions, such as the same rashi with different nakshatras, which our astrologer checks.

      What is Bhakoot dosha?

      When the two Moon signs sit 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, Bhakoot scores 0 of 7. If both signs share a lord, or the lords are friends, the tradition treats it as cancelled.

      Is Nadi dosha cancelled in any case?

      Yes. Classical texts cancel it when the rashi is the same but the nakshatras differ, when the nakshatra is the same but the rashis differ, or when the nakshatra is the same but the padas differ. Our astrologer reads these for your two charts.

      Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

      Many do. Manglik is very common and has several traditional cancellations, from the sign Mars is in to the other chart. Your PDF shows the check for both; our astrologer can read it in full.

      Is Manglik checked from the Lagna or the Moon?

      Both. We count Mars's house from the Lagna and from the Moon, for both people, and show all four results.

      Which details are needed for both people?

      Date of birth, exact time of birth and birth place for each person. The time matters because the Moon changes nakshatra about once a day.

      What if one birth time is not known exactly?

      Give your best estimate. The guna score comes from the Moon alone, so when the Moon sits well inside both its nakshatra and its rashi the score usually stays the same. The Lagna, the Navamsa and the Manglik check from the Lagna do depend on the time and can change. Our Birth Time Rectification service can estimate a likely time from life events; it is an estimate, not a recovered record.

      Is a high guna score enough?

      Not on its own. A total of 26 with Bhakoot dosha needs more reading than a total of 22 with no dosha. Read the points of each koota, then the two charts.

      What if fewer than 18 gunas match?

      A modest score asks for a closer look, not a decision. An astrologer reads the 7th house, the Navamsa and the cancellations in both charts before saying anything about the match.

      Which matching system do you use?

      The Ashtakoot (Guna Milan) system as followed in North India, with Lahiri ayanamsa. The scores are raw, exactly as counted; cancellations are read by our astrologer.

      Why does the Moon decide the match?

      The Moon stands for the mind and emotions, and its nakshatra describes temperament. Guna Milan compares the two Moons; the rest of each chart is read separately.
