Star positions are worked out for the hour from the catalogue (proper motion, parallax and aberration), in the same sidereal frame as the planets, with Lahiri ayanamsa. For the 36 stars compared, Swiss Ephemeris's own star file agrees within 2.4 arc-seconds. The Moon and planets are placed as seen from the Earth's centre; from your own place the Moon can look up to about 1° away from its spot here. The figure lines are our own; each yogatara is given by at least two of the sources listed above.

Each fact is given in at least two classical texts, and where the texts differ both readings are shown. Left out: the element (tattva), which only one of the texts we read gives (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 4); and any colour, number or stone for a rashi, which none of them ties to good fortune.

Questions

Vrishchik Rashi Questions

Who is the lord (swami) of Vrishchik rashi?

Mars, the lord of Vrishchik, is in Singh on 21 Jan, the 10th house from Vrishchik, until 9 Mar, 1:43 PM. Mars rules Vrishchik in every classical text we read: Brihat Jataka 1.6, Saravali 3.11 and Phaladeepika 1.6. Mars also rules Mesh.

Which name letters (naam akshar) belong to Vrishchik rashi?

On 21 Jan, the Moon is in Mithun; its next stay in Vrishchik runs from 30 Jan, 10:52 AM to 1 Feb, 10:52 PM: a child born in those hours has Vrishchik as janma rashi. Vrishchik's nine name syllables, one for each nakshatra pada, are To (Vishakha 4); Na, Ni, Nu, Ne (Anuradha 1–4); No, Ya, Yi, Yu (Jyeshtha 1–4). A name starting with one of them gives Vrishchik as the name rashi, which matches the janma rashi only when the name was chosen from the birth nakshatra.

Which nakshatras are in Vrishchik rashi?

On 21 Jan, the Moon is in Punarvasu; its next pass through Vrishchik begins in Vishakha pada 4, from 30 Jan, 10:52 AM. Vrishchik covers 210° to 240° of the sidereal zodiac: Vishakha pada 4, all four padas of Anuradha and all four padas of Jyeshtha, nine nakshatra padas in all, as every rashi has (Brihat Jataka 1.4, Hora Sara 1.13). If your rashi is Vrishchik, your birth nakshatra is one of these.

What are Vrishchik rashi people like?

The texts agree mostly on build: large, striking eyes and well-rounded thighs and knees. All three say early childhood calls for extra care of health, and two describe people who often make their own way early, apart from parents and teachers. These are the points that at least two of Brihat Jataka 17.8, Saravali 23.51 and Hora Sara 29.8 share. Brihat Jataka 17.13 adds that this picture holds in full only when the Moon, Vrishchik and its lord Mars are all strong in the birth chart, and Hora Sara 29.13 that a graha joining or aspecting the Moon changes it, so your own kundli says more than the rashi alone.

When do Sade Sati and Shani dhaiya start and end for Vrishchik rashi?

Neither Sade Sati nor dhaiya is running for Vrishchik on 21 Jan: Saturn is in Meen, the 5th house from Vrishchik. The next dhaiya (ashtama, Saturn in the 8th) for Vrishchik runs from 30 May 2032 to 12 Jul 2034. Each span runs from Saturn's first entry to its final exit, with every pause shown, and is counted from the Moon sign as Phaladeepika 26.22–23 and Brihat Samhita 104 count it. Classically Sade Sati and dhaiya ask for steady effort and patience; neither is a fixed outcome.

When does the time change for Vrishchik rashi?

Jupiter moves into Kark on Sunday 24 Jan, 3:01 PM, the 9th house from Vrishchik; Saturn moves into Mesh on 2 Jun, 7:58 PM (EDT), the 6th house from Vrishchik; Rahu moves into Dhanu and Ketu into Mithun on 24 May 2028, 5:38 AM (EDT), the 2nd and 8th houses from Vrishchik (true node; by the mean node many almanacs print, on 23 Jun 2028). Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu–Ketu stay in a sign for many months, so their changes set the background for Vrishchik, and each change above names the house it brings. The daily reading on this page weighs all nine grahas together, and no rashi has a good or a poor time as a whole.

What is Vrishchik rashi in English?

On 21 Jan, at 9:20 AM, the Sun is in Aquarius 1°18′ by the tropical zodiac that birthday signs use, but in Makar 7°04′ by the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology. Vrishchik is called Scorpio in English, yet a rashi is the Moon's sign at birth in the sidereal zodiac, not the birthday sign, so someone whose birthday makes them Scorpio need not have Vrishchik rashi.

The strength of the day's nakshatra for you, counted from your birth nakshatra in rounds of nine.
Retrograde (vakri)
Seen from Earth the graha appears to move backwards; shown as a fact only, as the texts differ on its meaning in transit.
Combust (asta)
Lost in the Sun's glare; in a favourable house its support is muted (Phaladeepika 26.32). Guru and Shukra: while not seen from India's reference latitude, 23°11′N (IAE); Mars, Mercury and Saturn by the books' degrees (Surya Siddhanta 9.6–9.8).
Felt most
The third of a sign in which a graha's transit is classically felt most: the Sun and Mars the first, Jupiter and Venus the middle, the Moon and Saturn the last (Phaladeepika 26.25; Muhurta Chintamani 4.19).
Mean-node reckoning
Rahu and Ketu by their average motion, which many almanacs print; its dates can differ from the true node by days.
Texts differ
The classical texts read this placement differently; we follow most of them and name the text that differs.
Panchang windows in your Chandrabala
Abhijit, Amrit Kalam, Brahma Muhurta, Vijaya or a Labh, Shubh or Amrit choghadiya, clear of Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Dur Muhurtam, Varjyam and Bhadra, inside the hours when the Moon is in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th from your Moon sign.
Own sign (swarashi)
A sign the graha rules (BPHS ch. 3).
Unfriendly sign
A sign whose lord the graha naturally counts as hostile (BPHS ch. 3).
Work and Money
Our grouping: read from the 10th, 6th, 3rd, 11th, 2nd and 12th houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name this area (BPHS ch. 11).
Love and Family
Our grouping: read from the 7th, 4th and 2nd houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name this area (BPHS ch. 11).
Health
Our grouping: read from the 1st and 6th houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name this area (BPHS ch. 11).
What supports
A graha in a house the texts count favourable, with nothing holding it back, or counted supportive by reverse vedha (Muhurta Chintamani 4.4).
What needs attention
Every other graha, each with the fact that puts it there: a house the texts do not count favourable, vedha, a debilitation or unfriendly sign, combustion, its own or exaltation sign in an unfavourable house, the Moon's company, or Chandrashtama.
House meaning
What each house stands for (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch. 11): 1 self and body, 2 family, wealth and speech, 3 courage and siblings, 4 mother, home and happiness, 5 children, education and intelligence, 6 health, work and competition, 7 marriage and partnership, 8 research and hidden matters, 9 fortune, dharma and father, 10 career and karma, 11 gains and friends, 12 expenses, foreign lands and moksha.
