How We Work Out Rashifal 2027

What we apply

  • There is no classical formula for a year: the texts read each planet's transit from your Moon sign and add that the result for you depends on your own chart's dasha and ashtakavarga. So the year here is the slow planets' stays, each with its classical reading, over the calendar year (1 January to 31 December).
  • The year is read from the four slow grahas, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, by their house from your Moon sign, with the same rules as our daily rashifal: favourable houses, vedha, own or exaltation sign, debilitation or an unfriendly sign, and combustion.
  • A period runs from one slow sign change, or one change in Jupiter's or Saturn's combustion, to the next. Within a period only Jupiter and Saturn count as obstructors (vedha); the faster grahas' vedha lasts days or weeks, so it is listed with its dates in the month cards and does not change a period. This standing-state reading is our own method.
  • Each period's label is our own method, not a classical score: of the four slow grahas, more supportive than asking for patience reads supportive, fewer reads a time for patience, equal reads mixed. The counts are shown beside it. There is no single label for the whole year.
  • The four life areas are our own grouping of houses whose meanings in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch. 11 name them: work and money (10th, 6th, 3rd, 11th, 2nd, 12th), love and family (7th, 4th, 2nd), health (1st, 6th), and, on the yearly page, study, children and faith (5th, 9th).
  • When Jupiter or Saturn enters a sign while moving forward and the Sun is then in your 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, and is itself counted supportive there (not in its debilitation sign or an unfriendly sign), a separate line says the Sun's strength at the entry supports the stay (Muhurta Chintamani 3.19; Jyotirnibandha p. 52). Only this lifting side is in both texts, so only it is shown, and it never changes a label. Entries made while retrograde are skipped: no text says whether they count.
  • At each sankranti the Moon's place from your Moon sign is read as Chandrabala at that very moment, never at sunrise (Muhurta Chintamani 3.19; Narada Samhita 11.26). When the Moon changes sign within 30 minutes of the sankranti, the line is left out.
  • An eclipse in your 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th is classically favourable for up to six months; elsewhere it asks for care (Muhurta Chintamani 4.6; Daivajna-manohara). The texts do not say whether an eclipse unseen at your place counts; tradition observes only a visible eclipse that is not penumbral, so the house reading is given only for those. That is our reading.
  • Combustion uses the panchang's orbs (Jupiter 11 degrees, Saturn 15 degrees from the Sun). Almanacs that print Guru or Shani asta by when the planet stops being visible at dawn or dusk give dates a few days apart.
  • Eclipse times are worked out to the second and printed to the nearest minute; the greatest moment is found between the minutes, not on them. The sutak moves with the first contact.
  • A station is the moment the planet's speed against the stars is zero. Mars', Jupiter's and Saturn's stations are given by date only, since the minute depends on the definition used.
  • Every house is counted from your Moon sign, as Phaladeepika 26.1 directs, in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa) with NASA JPL DE440 positions; Rahu and Ketu use the true node, as our kundli does, with the mean-node date many almanacs print shown beside it.
  • A transit's house verdict follows Phaladeepika 26.2, Brihat Samhita 104.4 and Muhurta Chintamani 4.1–3, which agree; the result named for each house is used only where Phaladeepika and Brihat Samhita agree.
  • Vedha is counted from your Moon sign (Narada), with no vedha between the Sun and Saturn or the Moon and Mercury.
  • Rahu and Ketu in a favourable house are held back in the same way by any of the seven grahas (Muhurta Chintamani 4.1; Kalaprakashika 36.18).
  • Reverse vedha counts a placement that asks for patience as supportive while another graha sits in its paired favourable house (Muhurta Chintamani 4.4; Narada Samhita 12.8), counted from your Moon sign; it never changes Chandrashtama.
  • In a favourable house, a graha in its debilitation sign or in an unfriendly sign gives muted support (Phaladeepika 26.32; Brihat Samhita 104.53).
  • In a favourable house, a graha close to the Sun (combust) gives muted support (Phaladeepika 26.32; Narada Samhita 12.11).
  • In a house that asks for patience, a graha in its own or exaltation sign does not work against you (Phaladeepika 26.31; Kalaprakashika 36.12).
  • When own or exaltation sign and combustion meet, no text read ranks one above the other, so the row is shown as mixed with both facts.
  • Rahu or Ketu in the 10th is read as a time for patience, as five texts read it (Muhurta Chintamani, Kalaprakashika, Sharngadhara, Jyotihprakasha and Shripati); Phaladeepika counts it favourable, so 'Texts differ' is shown beside it.
  • Retrograde is shown as a fact only. The texts disagree on what it means in transit, so a retrograde graha is read from the sign it occupies.

What we leave out, and why

  • Some texts say a slow planet's next sign begins to be felt months before it enters. They do not say how this works when the planet turns back, as Saturn does in 2027, so it is not used.
  • The 'double transit' of Jupiter and Saturn is a modern technique for a birth chart, not found in the gochara chapters read, so it is not used.
  • Jupiter's fast motion (atichara) belongs to muhurta, not to gochara results, so it is not used.
  • No gochara text grades a result by the planet's degree in a sign, so degrees are not used.
  • The year's raja and mantri, and the North Indian name of the samvatsara, are about the land rather than your rashi, and are not confirmed by a second source, so they are left out.
  • A lunar eclipse that is only penumbral is listed as astronomy but not counted as a grahan.

Held back until checked

  • Rahu and Ketu are given no exaltation or own sign here, because the texts disagree on them.
  • Kakshya timing is described in Phaladeepika 23.16–19 as another school's view and is not found in the other texts, so it is not used.
  • Saturn's 'paya' (gold, silver, copper or iron) is not shown: no verse for it was found in the main texts, and the popular rules disagree.
  • The classical texts say a favourable placement is held back by 'other grahas' without saying whether Rahu and Ketu count, so we count only the seven visible grahas as obstructors.
  • Reverse vedha is not applied to Rahu and Ketu: only one text reads it that way, so a node in a house that asks for patience is counted there as it is.

Words used on this page

30
Jupiter
One of the nine grahas: wisdom, children and growth.
Saturn
One of the nine grahas: duty, patience and steady work.
Rahu
One of the nine grahas: the Moon's north node, a shadow graha.
Ketu
One of the nine grahas: the Moon's south node, always opposite Rahu.
Supportive
A transit in a house the texts count favourable, with nothing holding it back.
Support muted
A favourable transit whose graha is debilitated, in an unfriendly sign or close to the Sun, so its support is counted as muted.
Eased
A transit in a house that asks for patience, eased because the graha is in its own or exaltation sign (Phaladeepika 26.31).
A time for patience
A transit in a house the texts count unfavourable: a time for steady effort and simple plans.
Chandrashtama: go gently
The Moon in the 8th sign from your Moon sign; traditionally a time to keep plans simple and go slow on big new decisions.
A time for patience
Our label for a period in which more of the four slow grahas ask for patience than support: a time for steady effort and simple plans.
Gochar (transit)
The movement of the grahas through the signs, read from your Moon sign (Phaladeepika 26.1).
House (bhava)
The count of signs from your Moon sign; the Moon sign itself is the 1st.
Vedha (obstruction)
A favourable transit is held back while another graha sits in its paired house (Phaladeepika 26.3–8).
Reverse vedha (vama vedha)
A transit that asks for patience is counted supportive while another graha sits in its paired favourable house (Muhurta Chintamani 4.4; Narada Samhita 12.8).
Sade Sati
Saturn's passage through the 12th, 1st and 2nd from your Moon sign, about seven and a half years; the name is later tradition, the houses are in Phaladeepika 26.22–23.
Retrograde (vakri)
Seen from Earth the graha appears to move backwards; shown as a fact only, as the texts differ on its meaning in transit.
Combust (asta)
The graha is so close to the Sun that it is lost in its glare; in a favourable house its support is counted as muted (Phaladeepika 26.32; Narada Samhita 12.11).
Felt most
The third of a sign in which a graha's transit is classically felt most: the Sun and Mars the first, Jupiter and Venus the middle, the Moon and Saturn the last (Phaladeepika 26.25; Muhurta Chintamani 4.19).
Texts differ
The classical texts read this placement differently; we follow most of them and name the text that differs.
Dasha
The planetary period running in your life by the Vimshottari system.
Exalted (uchcha)
The sign where a graha is strongest (BPHS ch. 3).
Debilitated (neecha)
The sign opposite its exaltation, where a graha is weakest (BPHS ch. 3).
Own sign (swarashi)
A sign the graha rules (BPHS ch. 3).
Unfriendly sign
A sign whose lord the graha naturally counts as hostile (BPHS ch. 3).
Work and Money
Our grouping: read from the 10th, 6th, 3rd, 11th, 2nd and 12th houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name this area (BPHS ch. 11).
Love and Family
Our grouping: read from the 7th, 4th and 2nd houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name this area (BPHS ch. 11).
Health
Our grouping: read from the 1st and 6th houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name this area (BPHS ch. 11).
The Moon at the sankranti
The Moon's house from your Moon sign at the moment of a sankranti, read as Chandrabala for the solar month (Muhurta Chintamani 3.19).
Eclipse by house
An eclipse in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th from your Moon sign is classically favourable for up to six months (Muhurta Chintamani 4.6).
Study, Children and Faith
Our grouping: read from the 5th and 9th houses from your Moon sign, whose meanings name children, learning, fortune and dharma (BPHS ch. 11).
